Recollection Wisconsin is a place to discover and share Wisconsin history. We learned that Wisconsin Library Services needed a web presence that engages viewers with interesting and relevant content from Wisconsin’s past while encouraging people to participate in building the growing database of historical imagery.
People use the website to search and browse historical resources from collections across the state. They have access to search 123,000 historical resources from 194 libraries across the state. Archived materials include photos, postcards, maps, letters, diaries, books, artifacts, oral histories and more. We needed a platform to invite users to contribute their own memories, images, knowledge and thoughts.
We developed a site using WordPress as a content management system. A new identity, including name, was implemented to signal the change to a more engaging and participatory web presence. We invited users on other social media platforms to visit the site, contribute to the discussions and browse the curated content.
The work was recently the recipient of an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH). The AASLH Leadership in History Awards, now in its 68th year, is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history. The winners represent the best in the field and provide leadership for the future of state and local history.
